Pope to Visit Spain in Spring, Says Nuncio

MADRID, Spain, OCT. 23, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II will visit Spain in the spring, the country's apostolic nuncio says.

The Pope might visit the dioceses of Madrid and Seville. The purpose of the visit is the canonization of Mother Maravillas de Jesús, a Carmelite nun who reformed her order and who died in 1974. Other Spaniards might also be canonized during the papal visit.

The Spanish government and the Vatican are studying proposals for the papal itinerary.

The nuncio, Archbishop Manuel Monteiro de Castro, said that his own statement was not the official announcement, which will be made later by the Vatican, when the program is finalized.

The nuncio said the Canary Islands are among the possible places the Pope will visit.
