ARMAGH, Northern Ireland, JULY 28, 2005 (Zenit.org).- The primate of all Ireland applauded the Irish Republican Army’s declaration that it will disarm, ending one of Europe’s worst, long-standing conflicts.
“Every word and deed that helps to foster peace is to be welcomed,” said Archbishop Sean Brady of Armagh, responding to today’s announcement that will end the IRA’s 35-year violent protest against British rule.
“In that spirit, I warmly welcome today’s very clear and significant statement by the IRA,” added the prelate in a press statement.
Hoping that the IRA will follow their words with action, the archbishop wrote that the army must “also accompany this historic declaration with the kind of actions that will build trust, inspire confidence and encourage a positive response from others.
“Were that to happen I am convinced that today’s developments will represent a unique opportunity to enhance the progress of recent years, and to construct a shared and secure future for all, built on new relationships of respect and understanding.”
“I also hope that the moment is near when all paramilitary groups will decide to banish forever the threat of violence,” he said.
“Peace is never achieved once and for all, but has to be constantly fostered by everyone in our society. I hope that today will encourage everyone to continue that search for a lasting peace,” said Archbishop Brady.
