BUENOS AIRES, MAY 13, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Argentine bishops´ conference urged politicians to take an “unheard-of” step to come to grips with the country´s “grave economic problems” and to avoid “a growing divorce with the people.”
In a document entitled “Today Our Homeland Requires Something Unheard-of,” the bishops on Saturday called attention “the persistence and extension of the people´s poverty and the disorder of the leaders.”
“Society calls for a just order that will succeed in detaching the Republic from the impositions … of internal and external power groups,” the bishops said, at the conclusion of their six-day plenary assembly.
The bishops said the “crisis in the scale of values, evident in the leadership and its repercussion in institutions, endangers the identity and integrity of the nation.”
President Fernando de la Rua, in a press statement, said that the “document was very valuable. … It is an invocation to the transcendent values of the nation, a message we must all hear and pay attention to, in order to improve in our vocation to service, our commitment to the people, and the protection of dignity and life.”
