YAKIMA, Washington, APRIL 12, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Tyson of Seattle as bishop of Yakima.
The Vatican announced today that Bishop Tyson, 53, will succeed Bishop Carlos Sevilla, 75, who reached the age of retirement.
Archbishop Peter Sartain of Seattle underlined the “honor” for his archdiocese “that the Vatican has recognized the talent of one of our priests by naming him bishop of Yakima.”
He added, “It also is a blessing for the Diocese of Yakima because Bishop Tyson was born there.”
“We will miss him, of course,” the archbishop said. “I have enjoyed working with him and have grown to appreciate his intelligence and skill, the qualities that will enable him to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the people of the Yakima Diocese.”
Joseph Tyson was ordained a priest for the Seattle Archdiocese in 1989. He was appointed auxiliary bishop in 2005.
He will be installed as the bishop of Yakima on May 31.
The Yakima Diocese has 79,317 Catholics, with 81 priests, 26 permanent deacons and 43 religious.
