BALTIMORE, Maryland, FEB. 11, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Bishops representing the episcopal conferences of Canada, the United States and Latin America are sharing success stories about communicating the faith with new media.
“Communion and Communication” was the theme of this 36th gathering of the bishops of America, held last Monday through Wednesday in Baltimore.
A final communiqué noted how the bishops “discussed successes and challenges in communicating and living the faith as a result of the rapidly changing means of social communications.”
They talked of how “the new media can serve to bring together and to expand the knowledge and personal experience of the message of Christ in a rapid and accessible manner, both within the Church and in society at large.”
The prelates also noted the need to form the faithful to reflect on what they find in the new media, in light of the Gospel.
In addition to the presidents of the Latin American bishops’ council and the Canadian bishops’ conference, and the vice president of the U.S. conference, four bishops from the four regions of Latin America and the Caribbean — the presidents of the episcopal conferences of Peru, Chile and Panama, as well as the general-secretary of the bishops’ conference of Brazil — also participated.
In total, 18 officials and representatives of the episcopal conferences attended.
