Bombay Gets Two New Auxiliary Bishops

NEW DELHI, India, MAR. 30, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II has appointed two seminary staffers, Father Percival Joseph Fernandes and Father Agnelo Rufino Gracias, as auxiliary bishops for the Bombay Archdiocese.

Father Fernandes was born in Mangalore in 1935. He was ordained a priest in 1960. After pastoral work and other assignments, he was sent to St. John´s Medical College in Bangalore, in 1978. He spent 22 years there, first as administrator and later on, after earning his doctorate in business and hospital administration in the United States, as director of St. John´s National Academy of Health Sciences. He has been on the staff of St. Pius X Major Seminary in Bombay since last year.

Father Gracias was born in 1939 in Kenya to Goan parents, who soon afterward returned to India. Ordained in 1962, he has spent most of his priestly life in the major seminary in Bombay: as professor of theology, spiritual director (1975-85), rector (1985-93), and dean of studies (1993 until last year).
