The archbishop of Boston visited the premises of Caritas-Peru to see firsthand the work of the Peruvian bishops´ Solidarity With the South campaign.
Cardinal Law encouraged the volunteers “not to falter in this action of solidarity that benefits so many Peruvians who have now fallen into misfortune.”
On behalf of the Boston Archdiocese, Cardinal Law offered a $200,000 donation to help quake victims in the south of Peru.
“It is our wish to be close to the Peruvian people now, in this lamentable tragedy,” Cardinal Law said during a press conference Wednesday. “Our presence expresses the solidarity that exists between us; it is a manifestation of the communion of the Archdiocese of Boston and the Church in Peru, a communion of faith and love that represents the heart of the Church.”
Boston is conducting a special collection for funds, and Cardinal Law said he hopes the funds will arrive in Peru in about two weeks.
He pointed out that Catholic Relief Services, the aid institution of the U.S. bishops, has contributed a similar amount to help quake victims and to reconstruct homes.
Cardinal Law will also visit with the priests of the St. James the Apostle mission of the Archdiocese of Boston, who are doing volunteer work and assisting victims in Peru.
