Cardinal Hopes Zapatista March Isn´t Just for Show

MEXICO CITY, FEB. 27, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, archbishop of Mexico City, said that the march of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation toward the capital, now under way, must be the beginning of a peace agreement.

Otherwise, the primate of Mexico said, it will end up being a “show.”

In statements published Monday in the Mexican press, the cardinal explained that the peace process must not be satisfied with the signing of a mere document, because the reason for the armed uprising was the “infra-human” conditions of life of the Indian communities in the southern state of Chiapas.

About two dozen Zapatista leaders are marching to Mexico City where they will present their claims to Congress.

Cardinal Rivera Carrera expressed the hope that the march of the Zapatista guerrilla army will be peaceful, yet fulfill its objective: “that it really succeed in obtaining peace.”
