Cardinal Robert Sarah has been named the new prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments.
This Sunday, Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Sarah to the post, which has been vacant since August. He was most recentlyserving as president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, the Church’s charitable arm.
Cardinal Robert Sarah succeeds Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, who held the post since December of 2008. Pope Francis named Cardinal Cañizares as archbishop of Valencia.
Born on June 15, 1945, in Ourous, Guinea, Cardinal Sarah was ordained a priest in the Guinean city of Conakry in 1969, the same city where he would serve as archbishop at age 34 in 1979, which made him the world’s youngest bishop.
In October 2001, the prelate was appointed secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of People. In October 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum. The following month, the Pope created him a cardinal.
