Cardinal Writes Book on Missionary Zeal

VATICAN CITY, JAN. 22, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Being a missionary is a Christian obligation, not an option, says a cardinal from Honduras.

Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, archbishop of Tegucigalpa, said this on Friday when presenting the book, “Go Out and Proclaim,” written by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes.

“To be a missionary is a command, there is no other choice,” said the Honduran cardinal. “Today’s world needs heralds” and people who “dare to find new ways of evangelization.”

God continues to call,” he added. “God is faithful and continues calling us to be collaborators.”

Cardinal Saraiva Martins reminded the audience that “the mission is the Church’s ‘raison d’etre.'”

The author illustrated the Christian’s identity, pointing out that “a Church that is not missionary is not the authentic Church of Christ.”
