Chicago Archdiocese Sets a Record in Fund Raising

CHICAGO, FEB. 28, 2003 (Zenit.org).- The Archdiocese of Chicago says its 3-year-old fund-raising drive has raised record pledges despite an economic slowdown and the priest sex abuse scandals, the Associated Press reported.

Cardinal Francis George said parishioners have pledged $220 million in a continuing campaign to expand schools and refurbish buildings, AP said.

He said the faithful looked past the scandal of abusive clergy and saw the needs of their 374 parishes. “We’re Catholics not because every bishop is a saint,” AP quoted him saying. “We’re Catholics because that’s where you go to get the gifts of Christ.”
