LONDON, FEB. 3, 2010 (Zenit.org).- As part of Marriage Week, which begins Monday in the United Kingdom, the bishops’ conference of England and Wales is launching a survey about marriage preparation programs.

The Catholic Marriage Preparation Survey is being launched by Bishop John Hine, chairman of the bishops’ Committee for Marriage and Family Life, as part of the week that will end Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day.

Couples and those that work in marriage preparation programs are encouraged to answer some questions online, such as: “How has the course affected your understanding of yourself, your partner and your relationship?

“How did you come to be involved in marriage preparation? Which topics do you cover in your course?”

Bishop Hine noted he received support for the survey initiative on a recent visit to the Pontifical Council for the Family.

“The sacrament of matrimony is a blessing that lasts for a lifetime, not just the day of the ceremony,” he said. “Preparation for such a great commitment, then, is an essential step in the journey towards marriage.”

The prelate said that the council “welcomed the survey which will undoubtedly give us a much better indication of how we can further develop this vital family ministry in future.”

Marriage Week activities will include the celebration of many weddings throughout England and Wales. The Diocese of Shrewsbury will hold a Mass in thanksgiving for the sacrament on Feb. 13.

The next day, Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster will lead prayers at the annual celebration of marriage and family life at Liverpool Cathedral.
