At this point, “60 prisoners have accepted the proposal to come out of prison and go to Spain,” indicated a communiqué signed by the spokesman of the archdiocese, Orlando Márquez Hidalgo.

The prisoners who will be released are Víctor Jesús Hechavarría Cruz, Osmel Arévalos Núñez, Alexis Borges Silva y Rodrig o Gelacio Santos Velázquez. They were not part of the Group of the 75, who were arrested in the Spring of 2003, and considered prisoners of conscience.

Elizardo Sánchez, spokesman of the Cuban Commission of Human Rights and National Reconciliation, explained to the media that the cases of the four men “are not completely documented” by the group opposing them.

“The common denominator is that they are accused of alleged crimes against the state,” for having used “some form of force or violence against things or persons,” indicated Sánchez.
