Francis Saddened by News of Fertilizer Plant Explosion

Sends Condolences and Prayers to Victims in Texas

In a telegram sent by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Pope Francis conveyed his condolences to the victims of the explosion that took place in a fertilizer plant in West, Texas last Wednesday.

The death toll from the explosion has reached 14 to date and hundreds are wounded.

The telegram, which was sent to Bishop Joe S. Vasquez of Austin, stated that the Holy Father was “saddened by the news of the destruction caused by the explosion in West.” Cardinal Bertone continued saying that the Holy Father conveyed his condolences to the civil authorities and to the families affected by the tragedy.

“[The Holy Father] prays for the eternal rest of the victims and implores God’s blessings of consolation and peace upon those who mourn and all who generously aid in the continuing work of relief,” the telegram concluded.
