JAKARTA, Indonesia, OCT. 15, 2002 (Zenit.org).- The grisly weekend attack on the island of Bali prompted a strong statement from the Catholic Bishops of Indonesia.

“We call on all Indonesians to consider this attack as a crime against humanity not in any way connected with the religious beliefs of the perpetrators or those behind it,” the statement said.

“We call on Christians in Indonesia not to feel provoked by the spirit of discord and hatred which works through irresponsible news reports,” it added. “We must work to overcome this crisis.”

Bomb explosions Saturday at Kuta killed 190 and wounded more than 300.

The bishops voiced sympathy with the grieving families and the wounded and assured prayers for the dead.

“This violence is a crime against the Creator who loves human beings and human life. This act destroyed life and is a crime against humanity,” the bishops wrote. They called on the government to find the criminals and bring them to justice, with the help of other countries if necessary.
