MAYNOOTH, Ireland, SEPT. 13, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The Irish bishops are urging school communities to participate online in Benedict XVI’s visit to the United Kingdom this week, particularly in an event centered on education.

A communiqué from the Irish Bishops’ Conference noted that “Catholic education will be an important subject” during the Pope’s trip to Scotland and England, which begins Thursday.

On Friday, school children and educators from Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales will gather with the Holy Father in at St. Mary’s University College, Twickenham, England, in an event dubbed “The Big Assembly.”

Irish schools are invited to join the celebration by watching the event, which will be streamed live through the Internet.

Bishop Brendan Kelly, chairman of the conference’s Council for Education, affirmed, “This is an exciting online opportunity for schools in Ireland to celebrate the universal values at the core of Catholic education and to highlight the outstanding work by pupils, teachers and parents that takes place in Catholic schools everywhere.”

The theme for the assembly is “I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full” (John 10: 10).
