Italian Church Donates $1.4 Million for Afghan Relief

ROME, DEC. 24, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Italian bishops´ conference allocated $1.4 million from the funds that Catholics allocate to the Church on their tax returns, to help the people of Afghanistan.

The Asian nation has been “tried by years of an oppressive regime and by the consequences of the present conflict to defeat the scourge of terrorism,” the conference said in a statement.

The bishops´ conference entrusted Caritas-Italy with the administration of the funds, in cooperation with Vatican charitable institutions and international groups active in Afghanistan.
