John Paul I’s Brother Dies

VATICAN CITY, MARCH 13, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI sent a telegram of condolence upon receiving the news of the death of Pope John Paul I’s brother, Edoardo Luciani, who died Tuesday at 91.

In the papal telegram, addressed to Bishop Giuseppe Andrich of Belluno-Feltre, Italy, Benedict XVI recalled his “cordial meeting” with Luciani in July last year.

The Pope noted Luciani’s “great human and Christian qualities, particularly his exemplary dedication to his family, his generous service to the Church, and his intense social commitment.”

“I pray fervently,” the Holy Father added, “that the deceased may — alongside his wife and his brother Pontiff whom he loved dearly — share in endless peace and joy with the Risen Lord.”
