King Abdullah II of Jordan yesterday received Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, in a meeting aimed at “boosting” relations between Jordan and the Holy See.
The meeting was seen as a sign of the King Abdullah’s desire for his country to be a model of coexistence between Muslims and Christians.
A statement from Jordanian News Agency, Petra, stated that King Abdullah promoted a recent conference that focused on the challenges faced by Arab Christians. The conference also called for maintaining a Christian presence in the country.
“The meeting also touched on efforts to achieve peace between the Palestinians and Israelis based on the two-state solution which would see an independent Palestinian state established on Palestinian national soil with East Jerusalem its capital living in peace and security alongside Israel ,” the communique stated.
The Jordanian king and Archbishop Mamberti also discussed the situation in the Holy Land, while stressing the role of the Holy See in supporting efforts to preserve the identity of all inhabitants in the region.
For his part, Archbishop Mamberti expressed his appreciation for Jordan’s role in promoting peace in the region. He also applauded King Abdullah’s efforts to foster interfaith dialogue as a way of bringing peace and stability to the Middle East.
