A Kremlin spokesman addressed unconfirmed reports of a possible visit by Russian president Vladimir Putin to Pope Francis.
According to report by Italian news agency ANSA, Dmitri Peskov neither confirmed nor denied rumors of the visit, saying that the schedule for any visit has not been set.
“We are still defining and discussing the program with our Italian counterparts. I can’t say anymore,” Peskov told ANSA.
President Putin will be attending an Italian-Russian summit in the northern Italian city of Trieste at the end of November and is also expected to travel to Rome to meet with Italian leaders.
If a visit to the Vatican does take place, it will be the first meeting between the Russian president and the Holy Father.
