Latvian President Meets With Pope

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 30, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI received Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga in audience for 15 minutes of private talks.

The Vatican press office gave no details of the meeting.

The Pope then welcomed the president’s husband and entourage.

Vike-Freiberga attended Pope John Paul II’s funeral and the Mass for the inauguration of Benedict XVI’s pontificate.

About 15% of Latvia’s 2.3 million inhabitants are Catholics. The majority of the population is Lutheran. There is also an important Orthodox representation.
