“I would invite everyone to live this Lent as an opportunity for engaging in what Benedict XVI called a formation of the heart” writes Pope Francis in his 2015 Lenten message. The pope subsequently encourages us to have a merciful heart.

Particularly helpful in this Lenten path is the book entitled “Lent with Saint Augustine.” The author, Fr. Waldemar Turek, esteemed patrologist and professor of Latin offers brief reflections for each day, beginning with Ash Wednesday and ending with Good Friday.

Each of these is based on a personal and gripping phrase from the Confessions of St. Augustine. Among the phrases chosen are: “My mother was weeping for me,” “Beauty which trascends all minds,” “They told me lies about you,” etc.

The author lingers on the most personal and touching expressions of this Father of the Church. Additionally, the choice of St. Augustine as guide for each day of Lent is particularly relevant, as he is a saint who experienced the mercy of God on his own flesh and formed a wise heart.

“Lent with Saint Augustine” began as Lenten reflections in Vatican Radio (Polish section) and evoked great interest. Consequently, it has been translated into Italian and later into English as well.
