Marchers braved an early morning snow to promote a “no” vote in the upcoming Feb. 11 referendum.
Margarida Neto, of the “No, Thank You” platform, addressed the crowd: “To defend life is an endless cause and nothing and no one we make us stop.”
Recalling a 1998 referendum which voted not to legalize abortion, she explained that it was the friendship and union of those against abortion that made them win and exhorted everyone to remain “united in the defense of life.”
Like the 1998 referendum, the one scheduled for Feb. 11 proposes to legalize abortion up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. Portugal currently allows abortions only in cases of rape, probable birth defects, or danger to the woman’s health.
