Media-Day Theme: "at the Service of Understanding"

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 29, 2004 (Zenit.org).- For World Communications Day 2005, John Paul II has chosen the theme “The Communications Media at the Service of Understanding between Peoples.”

The Vatican press office announced the theme today, in a statement from Archbishop John Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

“The theme chosen by the Holy Father reflects his desire that the media contribute to an authentic dialogue and mutual comprehension among peoples, leading to understanding, justice and an enduring peace,” Archbishop Foley said.

World Communications Day is celebrated in most countries on the Sunday before Pentecost — next year, on May 8.

The Pope’s message for World Communications Day is traditionally published in conjunction with the memorial of St. Francis de Sales, patron of writers, Jan. 24, to allow Church officials enough time to prepare materials for national and local celebrations.
