VATICAN CITY, JULY 19, 2011 (Zenit.org).- The Pontifical Commission for Latin America has a new counsellor and five new members, all cardinals.

Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and of Social Sciences, as a counsellor of the Latin America commission.

He also appointed five cardinals to serve as members: Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa, the retired archbishop of Santiago, Chile; Cardinal Julio Terrazas Sandoval, archbishop of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia; Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez Maradiaga, archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras; Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, archbishop of Lima, Peru; and Cardinal Cláudio Hummes retired prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.

Economic affairs

Joseph F. X. Zahra, a member of the governing council of the Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation, was named international reviser of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See.

Education

And three people were appointed members of the Academic Council of the Holy See’s Agency for the Evaluation and Promotion of Quality in Universities and Ecclesiastical Faculties (AVEPRO): Jesuit Father Gabino Uríbarri Bilbao, dean of the faculty of theology at the Pontifical University of Comillas in Madrid, Spain; Pascal Mueller-Jourdan, professor of theology at the Universtie Catholique de l’Ouest in Angers, France; and Sigrid Müller, vice dean of the Katholisch-Theologische Fakultat at the University of Vienna, Austria.
