The Office of Human Mobility of the bishops’ conference made its appeal in a document published April 4, entitled “The Migrant’s ‘Via Crucis,’ Path of Hope.”
Signed by Bishop Álvaro L. Ramazzini Imeri of San Marcos, office president, the document states that “the economic policies of governments of the region only recognize the importance of market globalization and the integration of the economic interests of great financial corporations through free-trade treaties.”
This has left “the poor without jobs and adequate salaries, plunging them into extreme vulnerability because of their lack of specialized working abilities,” the document says.
The Office of Human Mobility also laments “governments’ border-control policies … [which] have contributed to the abuse and even the death of migrants in Mexico and the United States.”
Consequently, the episcopate appeals to governments “to harmonize their migratory policies so that the migrants’ dignity is respected and the social consequences of migration are recognized.”
