Today’s announcement from the Vatican press office specified that he succeeds Archbishop Paolo Romeo, recently appointed Archbishop of Palermo.
Giuseppe Bertello, 64, was born in Foglizzo, Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1966.
After obtaining a degree in canon law, he entered the Holy See’s diplomatic service in 1971, serving the Pope in pontifical representations in Sudan, Turkey and the Holy See’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva.
Ordained bishop in 1987, he was appointed that year pro-apostolic nuncio in Ghana, Togo and Benin. He was appointed apostolic nuncio in Rwanda in 1991.
In 1996 he was appointed permanent observer of the Holy See to the World Trade Organization, headquartered in Geneva.
He was appointed apostolic nuncio in Mexico in 2000.
