Pope Laments Polish Mine Disaster

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 23, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI expressed sadness on hearing the news of a coal mine explosion Tuesday in Halemba, Poland, which claimed the lives of 23 people.

In a telegram sent by the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, to Archbishop Damian Zimon of Katowice, the Pope says he “entrusts the souls of the deceased to the mercy of God, praying that he will receive the selflessness of their fatigue and life, and introduce them in his glory.”

The Holy Father “with a cordial prayer, embraces the families of the dead and all those who mourn their unexpected death.”
