Pope Francis is sending his greetings to the thousands of athletes participating now in the All Africa Games.
After praying the midday Angelus today with those gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said:
“Two days ago the eleventh Africa games opened in Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of Congo, involving thousands of athletes from all over the continent. I hope that this great sports festival will contribute to peace, brotherhood and the development of all countries of Africa. We greet the Africans who are participating in these games.”
The Pope will visit Africa this November. On Friday, it was reported that the bishops of Kenya are expecting the Holy Father’s arrival in Nairobi on Nov. 25.
The All Africa Games are held every four years and are now underway through Sept. 18. More than 50 nations are participating this year, with competitions being held in about two dozen sports. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the games; they were held for the first time in 1965, also in Brazzaville.
