Pro-lifer Hopeful as Alito Joins Court

WASHINGTON, D.C., JAN. 31, 2006 ( Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, voiced optimism in the wake of Samuel Alito’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Alito, a former federal appellate judge, was sworn in today as the nation’s 110th Supreme Court justice, hours after the Senate voted 58-42 to confirm him.

He replaced retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, a swing vote on the court who has supported abortion.

In a statement, Father Pavone said, “Priests for Life is grateful to the voters who, in the elections of 2004, were motivated by the desire to change the Supreme Court, particularly on the way it rules regarding abortion. No issue is of greater moral consequence.

“We expect that the changes on the Court will move us closer to an end to legal abortion in America.”
