Mother General Antonia Colombo explained the principal topic of the meeting when she greeted the 192 chapter representatives of the 1,559 Salesian communities worldwide. The congregation has 15,073 members.
The Mother General emphasized the need to listen to the questions posed by life and the mission of the religious in “the era of globalization and cyberspace.”
The above translates, she said, in promoting “the positive role of woman in the creation of a culture of peace,” and in intervening, to identify how women and children are exploited and ostracized in various cultures.
Among those attending the chapter opening were Cardinal Eduardo Martínez Somalo, prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and Archbishop Tarcisio Bertone, secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
