ROME, SEPT. 11, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The Catholic lay Community of Sant’Egidio has convoked prayer services to commemorate the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, particularly in New York, site of part of the tragedy, and in Rome.

The community has just concluded in Krakow, Poland, an interreligious meeting to promote world peace, which marked the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II. In that same spirit, members of the community have gathered to “pray for all the victims of violence and terrorism.”

Organizers explained that the meetings aim to keep the world from forgetting “the horror of that tragic attack that marked the lives of thousands of people and has become a point of no return for our era.”

The terrorist attacks on New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon resulted in the death of 2,993 people.

The prayer services also aim to foster “an ever growing commitment on the path of encounter and dialogue,” organizers stated.

The Rome prayer service will be held at St. Mary’s Basilica in Trastevere and the New York service at the church of St. Joseph.
