The Catholic Church in South Korea is set to unveil a commemorative stone to mark the first anniversary of Pope Francis’ visit to the country.
According to South Korean news agency, Yonhap, the commemorative floor tile will be placed on the northern tip of Gwanghwamun Plaza, the site of the Beatification Mass of the Korean martyrs, Paul Yun Ji-chung and his 123 companions, presided by the Holy Father.
Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung will lead the unveiling ceremony on August 23rd.
The Holy Father’s visit to South Korea marked the first trip to Asia of his pontificate. An estimated 800,000 people attended the Beatification Mass at Gwanghwamun Gate.
“The heritage of Blessed Paul Yun Ji-chung and his companions – their integrity in the search for truth, their fidelity to the highest principles of the religion which they chose to embrace, and their testimony of charity and solidarity with all – these are part of the rich history of the Korean people,” Pope Francis said during his homily on August 16th, 2014.
