Superficial Understanding

A response to: Oh, But They Do Understand

I visit the schools and I often hear students ask: “Why does the Church hate homosexuals?  Why does the Church think women are second-class citizens?”

People may understand that the Pope is against abortion and same-sex marriage, but they lack the basics of catechesis, and many in the Church are to blame for this, as it is the result of watered down evangelization.  As Father Robert Barron has stated, “The Catholic story is being told, but being told by the wrong people and in the wrong way. We need to tell our own story.”

People out there think the Church is preaching hatred, when in reality it is only leading people to the one and only wellspring of life and love.  If people have an understanding of the Church’s teaching, in modern/secular circles, it is at best a superficial understanding.
