Theologians' Videoconference to Touch on War and Peace

ROME, JAN. 28, 2003 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican Congregation for Clergy will sponsor a videoconference of theologians Wednesday on the topic “Peace Challenged by War, Violence and Terrorism.”

Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos, prefect of the congregation, will introduce the debate, which starts at noon, Rome time.

Scheduled speakers include Cardinal Edward Egan, archbishop of New York, and:

— Cardinal Antonio Rouco Varela, archbishop of Madrid, Spain, who will speak on the death penalty.

— Metropolitan Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz of the Mother of God in Moscow, who will discuss the arms race.

— Bishop Rino Fisichella, rector of the Urban University of Rome, who will explain the difference between a suicide-attacker and a martyr.

— Archbishop George Pell of Sydney, Australia, who will reflect on the lawfulness of nuclear war.

— Pontifical Household theologian Father Georges Cottier, who will address “The Effort for Peace in the Magisterium of John Paul II.”
