Union of Superiors General Elects Salesian

ROME, NOV. 27, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Father Pascual Chávez Villanueva, rector major of the Salesians, has been elected president of the Union of Superiors General for a three-year term.

The election was held Friday at the conclusion of the organizations’ annual General Assembly, which took place at the Salesianum.

Father Chávez succeeds Brother Álvaro Rodríguez, superior general of the De La Salle Brothers, who was president since 2000.

Father Joseph Tobin, superior general of the Redemptorists, was re-elected vice president.

The Union of Superiors General is an organization of pontifical law and has a public juridical personality, along the lines of Canon 709 of the Code of Canon Law.

The group says its aim is “to promote the life and mission of the individual institutes that serve the Church in order to facilitate more effective cooperation between them and achieve more fruitful contacts with the Holy See and the hierarchy of the Church.”

All superiors general of the religious institutes or societies of apostolic life recognized by pontifical law are members. Superiors general of institutes recognized by diocesan law may become associate members.
