Vatican Film List “Opened Doors to Us”

LONDON, DEC. 8, 2004 ( A recent Financial Times article on the president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications noted that the Holy See won support for its Top 45 list of movies.

The newspaper noted that Archbishop John Foley “headed the commission that drew up a list of 45 ‘exemplary’ films to commemorate the centenary of cinema in 1996.”

Praised films “included religiously themed works such as Pasolini’s ‘The Gospel According to St Matthew'” and “the more-worldly ‘On the Waterfront’ and ‘Citizen Kane.'”

There was a “very favorable response” from the studios, Archbishop Foley said. “It opened more doors to us.”
