The newspaper noted that Archbishop John Foley “headed the commission that drew up a list of 45 ‘exemplary’ films to commemorate the centenary of cinema in 1996.”

Praised films “included religiously themed works such as Pasolini’s ‘The Gospel According to St Matthew'” and “the more-worldly ‘On the Waterfront’ and ‘Citizen Kane.'”

There was a “very favorable response” from the studios, Archbishop Foley said. “It opened more doors to us.”
