ROME, AUG. 31, 2001 (Zenit.org).- A worldwide Catholic communications association has been created, the result of the fusion of two organizations for radio and television (Unda) and film (OCIC).

The new institution, called Signis, will be officially announced during a world congress here in November. Unda and OCIC had decided on the plan in 1998 during a meeting in Montreal.

Unda (the Latin word for wave) is the International Catholic Association for Radio and Television. Unda represents 133 national and 22 international organizations. It coordinates a network of Catholic associations and individuals involved in broadcasting, and provides them with a forum for professional collaboration. It liaises with Catholic and non-Catholic organizations.

Unda aims to ensure a human and Christian spirit in media, to promote media training and education, and to achieve effective religious broadcasting.

Unda enjoys consultative status with UNESCO, the U.N. Economic and Social Council and with the Council of Europe. It is a member of the Conference of International Catholic Organizations.

Founded in April 1928, the International Catholic Organization for Cinema and Audiovisual is made up of 160 member associations, operating in more than 140 countries and territories.

OCIC maintains relations with intergovernmental authorities in the U.N. system. It enjoys consultative status with UNESCO as well as with the Council of Europe.

Since 1935, OCIC has been recognized by the Holy See as the official organization of the Catholic Church in the field of cinema.

OCIC is a member of the International Council for Cinema and Television, and the International Center of Films for Children and Young People.
