Trial Date Set for 5, Including Priest, in Bishop´s Killing

GUATEMALA CITY, FEB. 2, 2001 (Zenit.org).- On Feb. 15 a trial is scheduled to begin for three military men, a priest and a housekeeper, implicated in the April 1998 murder of Guatemalan Bishop Juan Gerardi.

Judge José Eduardo Cojulún, of the Third Court of Sentence, said Thursday he has accepted the evidence presented by the Attorney General´s office, the Catholic Church, and the defending counsel of the five accused.

The accused military men are retired Colonel Byron Disrael Lima Estrada; his son, Captain Byron Lima Oliva; and José Obdulio Villanueva, a former member of the Presidential Chief of Staff, an elite army corps.

Also accused are Father Mario Orantes, who lived in the same house as the bishop, and the murdered bishop´s former cook, Juana Margarita López.
