Salvador Seeks Aid to Rebuild 422 Churches

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, MAR. 13, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Catholic Church in El Salvador will appeal for aid from the United States, Spain and Italy, to reconstruct more than 400 historic churches destroyed by the two recent earthquakes.

Archbishop Fernando Saenz Lacalle of San Salvador announced that this week he will travel to request assistance, which will also be applied to the reconstruction of dozens of damaged parish schools.

The archbishop will meet with representatives of the dioceses of the most important cities of these three countries, which have given the greatest amount of aid through Caritas-El Salvador, following the Jan. 13 and Feb. 13 quakes. Official reports state 422 churches were damaged in the country´s 14 regions.
