Stuart Varney quit as co-anchor of Cable News Network´s prime-time financial news show «Moneyline News Hour,» the New York Daily News reported March 14. Varney quit after hearing Turner call CNN employees who observed Ash Wednesday «Jesus freaks.»
Turner later apologized for his remark. He had been heard to voice disparaging remarks against the Catholic Church on other occasions. For Varney, who began to work for CNN in 1980, the comment on Ash Wednesday was the last straw, the News said.
Reuters reported that Varney had been critical of the CNN show´s direction for some time. Neither CNN nor Varney commented on the press reports.
