Desmond Connell was born March 24, 1926, in Phibsboro, in the Archdiocese of Dublin, Ireland, and ordained May 19, 1951. In his letter, written in Latin, John Paul II makes special mention of the 35 years the Irishman spent as a professor and cites Jesus´ command: "Go and teach."

The Pope named him archbishop of Dublin in January 1988 and made him a cardinal last February.
