Dominicans Pick Argentinian as Master General

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, JULY 15, 2001 (Zenit.org).-The Dominican order elected an Argentinian as its new leader, only the second non-European master general to serve in the order´s almost 800 years of existence.

Father Carlos Azpiroz, from Buenos Aires, was elected Saturday, by 127 delegates representing more than 6, 000 brothers in the Dominican order worldwide.

Father Azpiroz, 44, is a specialist in canon law. He will serve for a nine-year term. He succeeds Father Timothy Radcliffe, the first English master of the order.

The delegates of this international order, whose ranks have included Thomas Aquinas and Catherine of Siena, will continue to reflect on their current mission in the world, through Aug. 8, at Providence College.
