New Archbishop of Bordeaux Appointed

VATICAN CITY, DEC. 21, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II today appointed the new president of the French episcopal conference, Bishop Jean-Pierre Riccard, as archbishop of Bordeaux.

The new archbishop, 57, who has been bishop of Montpellier since 1996, will succeed Cardinal Pierre Eyt, who died June 11.

Bishop Riccard was elected president of the episcopal conference at Lourdes on Nov. 6. He succeeded Cardinal Louis-Marie Billé in the presidency, who resigned for reasons of health.
