Vietnam Cracking Down on Religion, Says Activist

WASHINGTON, D.C., FEB. 14, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Vietnam is intensifying its persecution of religious groups, a human-rights activist told a congressional hearing.

Michael K. Young, chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, on Wednesday said that the Hanoi government has stepped up its action against religious groups since May.

Young also referred to the detention of several religious leaders, among them Father Tadeus Nguyen Van Ly, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison last October for threatening national unity.
