Man Arrested in Colombian Archbishop´s Murder

ROME, MARCH 27, 2002 (Zenit.org).- A man has been arrested in connection with the March 16 murder of Colombian Archbishop Isaías Duarte Cancino, an army commander said.

News of the arrest was announced by General Francisco René Pedraza, commander of the army´s 3rd Division.

According to investigators, John Jairo Maturana is believed to be the head of a criminal band that operates in the neighborhood of Good Shepherd Parish in Cali, where the archbishop was murdered, Radio Caracol reported Tuesday.

Although the suspect´s alleged role in the murder is still unclear, army sources say they believe he was the mastermind behind the crime. Maturana claims he is innocent.

The Colombian press reported that Maturana in the past had a leading role in a television advertising campaign against drug abuse, sponsored by the presidency.
