ROME, JUNE 4, 2002 (Zenit.org).- In what could a record, the ecclesial movement Communion and Liberation organized a series of spiritual exercises for 26,000 people.

The event took place in the Italian coastal city of Rimini from May 3-5. The participants, members of this ecclesial movement, came from 50 countries. Participants in several other cities followed the meditations by satellite link.

Monsignor Luigi Giussani, founder of Communion and Liberation, centered his meditations on this observation: «It is really mind-boggling that God — God, who fashions the whole world at this moment — in seeing and hearing man says: ´Do not weep!´»

«Do not weep, because I have not created you for death, but for life,» the priest added, when commenting on the Gospel passage of the widow of Naim, whose sorrow over the death of her son moved Jesus (Luke 7).

«Do not weep!» Jesus said to the widow. «He says it to us,» Monsignor Giussani said, «when we return home, when we go into the subway, when we board the train, when we are in the midst of traffic, when we think of the myriad things that concern the lives of million and millions of men.»

«Man, woman, young man, young woman, you, do not weep!» Monsignor Giussani concluded. «There is a look and a heart that penetrates to the marrow of your bones, and loves you for your ultimate end.»
