Kuala Lumpur Auxiliary Is Named Archbishop

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, MAY 25, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II appointed Auxiliary Bishop Murphy Pakiam of Kuala Lumpur as archbishop of the Malaysian archdiocese.

He is succeeding Monsignor Antony Soter Fernandez, who presented his resignation to the Pope in keeping with the canonical norm covering «illness or another serious cause.»

The archdiocese has 91,951 baptized Catholics in a population of 7.9 million. Malaysia has 752,000 Catholics among its 22.6 million inhabitants, according to Church statistics.
