Auxiliary for Abuja, Nigeria

ABUJA, Nigeria, NOV. 8, 2011 (Zenit.org).- A Nigerian native who studied in Ireland has been named an auxiliary bishop of Abuja.

Benedict XVI appointed Father Anselm Umoren of the Missionary Society of St. Paul. He will assist Archbishop John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, 67.

Bishop-designate Umoren, 49, was serving as the superior-general of the Missionary Society of St. Paul.

The Archdiocese of Abuja has nearly 3 million people, of whom just over a half million are Catholics. They are served by some 110 priests and 330 religious.

Anselm Umoren was born in Ukana Nto, Nigeria, in 1962 and ordained a priest in 1988. He obtained his master’s degree in Ireland and has worked as a missionary in Sierra Leone, Cameroon and Sudan.
