Father Lombardi spoke Thursday about the ongoing investigation into the case of Archbishop Józef Wesołowski.

The spokesman said Pope Francis was informed of the accusations by the cardinal archbishop of Santo Domingo, Nicolás López Rodríguez. The Vatican secretariat of state then recalled the nuncio, suspending him from his post, and opening an investigation with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The Vatican also expressed to the authorities of the Dominican Republic its readiness to collaborate with the investigation there. Diplomatic immunity for the nuncio will not be invoked.
